By Orville Clarke, Freelance WriterBOTH THE Super-6 and Pick-9 start anew at Caymanas Park tomorrow, the well-supported programme featuring 10 races including three offering trophies.
These are the round five Winne Anglin Memorial Cup for native bred maiden two-year-old fillies, the Restricted Allowance II (non winners of two) for the Titania Trophy over 1100 metres as well as the closing race for the Meadowvale Citizens Association Trophy over 1200 metres for maiden three-year-olds.
The focus is on the Super-6 tomorrow, this embracing races five to 10.
First of these is the Winnie Anglin Memorial Cup to be contested by seven two-year-olds, including TOTAL MOTION, stable-companion MEDAL OF HONOUR and CANTRA LIBRE, the three expected to fight out the finish.
Both TOTAL MOTION and CANTRE LIBRE caught the eye in finishing second on their recent debut. The Wayne DaCosta-trained filly TOTAL MOTION finished three lengths second to her unbeaten stable-companion CRUCIAL POINT in the Keeling Memorial Cup over 1100 metres on August 2, chasing the winner from soon after the start and outbattling the more experienced SHARAPOVA for second.
CANTRE LIBRA, on the other hand, finished a good second to KAZ HO ME over 800 metres straight on September 6, a race in which the DaCosta-trained MEDAL OF HONOUR finished a length behind her in third.
Of the three, TOTAL MOTION (working well) looks the most advanced and with champion jockey Trevor Simpson now taking the ride, the bay filly by Royal Minister - Fizzaz should set off in front and not be caught.
Next on the programme is a $140,000 claiming race to be contested by 12 srarters. The main hopefuls are the course specialists CALL TO ARMS, DR. PEPPER and KING OF THE BAND, along with recent course winner FIRST TRICK.
The one I like best is the late kicking CALL TO ARMS, who has won two of his last three races over the straight in recent months. The eight-year-old gelding failed to complete the hat-trick on August 2 when finishing three lengths third to SOPHISTICATED LADY and KING OF THE BAND over the course, but was apprentice ridden then.
CALL TO ARMS should benefit from the stronger handling of jockey Chris Ferron, who won aboard him on July 16 under topweight of 57.0kg. He should win from KING OF THE BAND who himself failed to achieve the hat-trick when narrowly beaten by SOPHISTICATED LADY, and DR. PEPPER who beat a good field over the round five course on August 30 but is better over the straight.
Race seven over 1400 metres should see ARIZONA STAR, DOCTOR ON CALL, KYLE'S DIVA and PRIME SUSPECT in contention where it matters.
FAVOURITE
ARIZONA STAR will more than likely start favourite, seeing that he takes a significant step down the claiming latter to contest this race, moving from claiming $300,000 to $190,000.
The four-year-old gelding from the stables of Anthony Nunes ran VISIONARY to a length in a 1400-metre trophy race on July 22, having some good horses behind him in the process.
Despite the sound claims of the free running DOCTOR ON CALL, who has caught the eye at exercise in preparation for this race, and KYLE'S DIVA who was not disgraced behind the disqualified LUCKI PLUCKI last Saturday, ARIZONA STAR has been aimed too low for this race and should prove hard to beat.
Those looking for a good outsider could try the three-year-old filly HIGHEST CREST who was unplaced to SHE'S A RANKING in a fast-run race over the distance on September 6, but has less to do on this occasion.
IMPRESSIVE WINNER
Moving to the eighth race over 1500 metres, SAMMY MY GIRL was such an impressive winner in a good time (1:07.4) over 1100 metres last Saturday, that the four-year-old filly could repeat in a tougher spot, despite having changed stables, moving from Gary Subratie to Anthony Subratie.
SAMMY MY GIRL will not be inconvenienced by the longer distance, yet I have a gut feeling that she will fall victim to either SWEET JADE ot TOO HOT TO TROT. SWEET JADE ran IRISH STAR to half a length over the circular nine course in the Magnum Trophy race on August 9, while TOO HOT TO TROT chased home SEXY over the distance on August 27 when having SWEET JADE well behind in 10th.
The ninth race for the Titania Trophy over 1100 metres looks tailored for the Philip Feanny-trained filly DUTY CALL, who feat all barring ROCKET GUITAR in a fast-run straight five race on August 30. Her main dangers are stable-companion SUPRA LEI and OK MOM, both extremely fit and dangerous.
The closing race for the Meadowvale Citizens Association Trophy looks tailored for the lightly raced 3-y-o gelding MAMBO, who was a fast-finishing third to DUE RESPECT over 1100 metres on September 10. MAMBO will relish the additional 100 metres and should win from BLAZING BULLET, now better for his July 5 pipeopener.
