Cornwall five get G-G Awards
published: Friday | September 26, 2003

By Denise Clarke, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

FIVE EXEMPLARY citizens from the county of Cornwall were on Wednesday evening presented with the Governor-General's Achievement Awards for 2003.

They are Delford George Morgan, the recipient for the parish of Westmoreland; Enid Millicent Hendricks from St. Elizabeth; Marva Trenfield from Hanover; Glester Rowe from Trelawny and Nella Perrier from St. James.

Mr. Morgan, an attorney-at-law, is the Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar and chairman of the Westmoreland Parish Council. Mrs. Hendricks has been an educator for many years, with her experience spanning from the basic school level to training students for the teaching profession.

Mrs. Trenfield, who has been teaching for about 30 years, is the principal at the Sandy Bay Primary and Junior High School, while Mr. Rowe is a successful agriculturalist. He is also the manager of the South Trelawny Community Development Fund, an affiliate of the MICRO Investment Development Agency. Mrs. Perrier is the founder of the Supreme Preparatory School in St. James, which she established in 1992 after teaching for 28 years.

The Custodes for the five parishes presented the awards and citations to the respective honourees. Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke, implored the recipients to continue giving of their best to the country.

"We want to thank you the awardees for what you have done," Sir Howard said. "We can't give to everyone who has done well; we want to thank those of you who were never mentioned but keep Sunday schools and basic schools."

HONOURABLE AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS

Roy Hutchinson, Chairman of the Victoria Mutual Building Society who brought greetings on behalf of the sponsors, said the awardees had shown themselves to be honourable and responsible citizens.

"Despite the high levels of crime and violence in the society and those who seek to earn a living by devious means, it is very encouraging to see those who are willing to work hard and assist those in need," Mr. Hutchinson said.

Speaking on behalf of the honourees, Mr. Morgan said the awards were an incentive for them to work harder towards the development of the country.

The awardees were entertained by students from the Savanna-la-Mar Primary School and Corporal Balfour Gore of the Savanna-la-Mar Police Division. He delivered an exceptional poem, entitled 'A two hands we need', which implores the Jamaican citizenry to assist the police in fighting crime.

The 2003 Cornwall recipients of the GGAA were also invited to be honorary members of the newly-formed Governor-General Awardees Asso-ciation. Since its inception in 1991, 168 persons have received the Governor-General's Achievement Awards (GGAA).

The presentation ceremony was held at the Negril Hills Golf Club and was chaired by Mr. Larklin Hall, the national co-ordinator for the awards.

The event was sponsored by The Gleaner Company Ltd., the Jamaica National Building Society, Victoria Mutual Building Society, Scotia Jamaica Building Society and First Caribbean International Bank.
