Disturbance at Fort Augusta
published: Friday | September 26, 2003

A BRAWL between visitors and correctional officers at the Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre for women, St. Catherine, escalated into a disturbance yesterday at the penal facility.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, at least three of their officers were injured.

A report from the Correctional Department said a detachment of police and military personnel was deployed to the all-female prison in an attempt to restore order.

Up to late yesterday evening Major Richard Reese, head of the Correctional Services, and his senior officers, were meeting with staff and inmates to get to the root of the problem.

According to reports, a woman who had gone to the prison to visit her relatives got into a dispute with a female correctional officer. It is not sure what sparked the altercation.

Yesterday's drama followed closely on the heels of a beating incident at the facility during which three correctional officers were injured by inmates.
