Arnett escape with lucky win
published: Monday | September 29, 2003

By LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

AFTER BEING outplayed from the start, Arnett Gardens' Kwame Richardson pierced the heart of Tivoli Gardens in the 69th minute to steal victory in their Wray & Nephew National Premier League game yesterday at Railway Oval.

Arnett, unsteady throughout, capitalised on one of their few opportunities while Tivoli had a number of chances but could not close the deal.

Disbelief stuck to the face of Tivoli's coach Glendon "Admiral" Bailey as he saw Andrew Chisholm send their last chance to equalise over the crossbar in the 90th minute.

"Bwoy, is like a spell following us, I'm telling you the truth," he said after the game. "What happened today is what has been happening after we played Village (United). We outplay all the teams yet end up losing all the matches. We can't seem to find the back of the net, I don't know why. We just have to take a day and look in ourselves, do some self-searching. I don't know what it is, but something is wrong. We're just not scoring," said Bailey.

BETTER SHOWING

Arnett's coach Jerome Waite agreed with Bailey. He said that Tivoli had a better showing but that Arnett's character was on display today.

"It was sheer guts and determination today for us. Tivoli showed that they were the team today. It was a mere Julian McLeish (goalkeeper) against Tivoli Gardens and you have to give Tivoli credit, they were just unfortunate. But these things happen in a game, today was just our lucky day. We scored one and things eventually worked out for us." Waite said.

This was Tivoli's third consecutive loss but Bailey said there is still enough time for them to strengthen their weaknesses and remain competitive.

"Right now it's too early to panic, but looking at the first round final it has really put us in a peculiar position. We are playing the ball, we're just not finding the back of the net, so we just have to find a way to start scoring, and once we start doing that our problems will be over," he said.
