Village edge Reno 1-0
published: Monday | September 29, 2003

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

VILLAGE MADE the most of few chances to inflict a 1-0 win over Reno in their Wray & Nephew National Premier League game at Frome yesterday.

National representative Fabian Dawkins got his third goal of the season when he beat goalkeeper Kingsley James at the near post in the 34th minute, in a game that got scrappier the longer it went on.

The field which is well grassed and muddy after constant rain the past week made conditions difficult on the players as well and it appeared it was the visitors who suffered the most.

National goalkeepers Donovan Ricketts of Village and Aaron Lawrence of Reno who started the teams' previous game but had to be substituted due to injuries sat out yesterday's match, as they had not recovered fully.

While not agreeing that his team looked unfit, Lloyd Williams, who is in charge of the Village outfit, said he was happy for the points.

"Yes, I am satisfied with (the) three points but what I really wanted was 90 minutes of disciplined football."

Williams said that coming up against the man he "under studied for two years, I know he was hoping we would be indisciplined and give him room to counter, we did give them some chances but was hoping we would not have given them any at all."

Maxwell counted all of "seven clear chances", adding that "the game was a hard one to lose after controlling so much of the ball throughout the game".

While bemoaning his team's paucity of good strikers, Maxwell said it was hard to win games when the team was not taking advantage of the chances they were given.
