Our republican status
published: Wednesday | October 1, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE PERMIT me some space in your newspaper to voice a concern on our embarkment towards republican status. I should first declare that I hardly ever agree with the JLP on anything, but on this point I am in total agreement with them. The PNP wants an Executive President, I strongly disagree and I am more in favour of having a Ceremonial President.

I believe that a ceremonial presidency at this time will give Jamaica ample time to sort through our constitution and develop one that is reflective of our customs and traditions, and one which will exemplify practicality. Executive presidency at this time will not allow us the time frame and flexibility that we would want to exhibit at a time so critical in global affairs.
