Overcharged commuters

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE FOLLOWING is an open letter to the Transport Authority of Jamaica.
We, the commuting public, realise that the taxi operators are faced with numerous operating costs and thus a raise in fare is justified. However, the Authority needs to be made aware that on some routes, especially in the rural areas, we have already been overcharged, and these unscrupulous operators will use this opportunity to exploit us even further if nobody intercedes on our behalf.
We have made numerous complaints to the Transport Authority, only always to be told, "Have your correct fare at all times and pay no more". This is not good enough, because these operators have been allowed to set their own fares and there's nothing we can do about it.
Is it the Transport Authority which grants licences to the operators, so the Authority must know the various routes throughout the country. We are humbly asking that the Authority go to the various routes and establish thereon the correct fares for both commuters and taxi operators to know what they are.
