Post offices to be revamped
published: Wednesday | October 1, 2003

By Roy Sanford, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

MAJOR DEVELOPMENT work will soon be undertaken on post offices in three parishes as part of the Government's move to modernise the nation's postal services.

Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Commerce, Science and Technology, made the announcement on Monday during a function to commemorate the restoration of the Falmouth Post Office.

Mr. Paulwell stated that this development process being undertaken was a part of a new initiative by the Postal Administration and the Government.

PARTNERSHIP

He pointed out that one of the landmark ventures of the programme, which has been dubbed the 'Community-based Partner-ship Initiative,' has been the arrangement for the development of the Liguanea Post Office property to provide 48,000 square feet of commercial space.

"At the same time, expressions of interest have been invited for the development of the five other properties in Constant Spring, St. Ann's Bay, Negril, Bluefields and Savanna-la-Mar," Mr. Paulwell further added.

He also noted that the initiative was critical to the national effort to modernise and commercialise the nation's postal services. "At the national level, our infrastructure development plan for the postal service is focused on, providing new and modern facilities not only for regular postal services but also for increased access to technology," he explained.
