THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE NUMBER of killings at busy intersections, on buses and in communities, is rising again. From a layman's observation it is clear that there is no respect for life by these killers. A combination of strategies has to be used to reduce these types of murders. To highlight a few:
The Government needs to ensure that investigating units are well-equipped and organised to solve the numerous murders.
Seek the assistance of community experts to go into communities all over the island to assist with the re-socialisation of the youth in dealing with conflict or how they address issues.
The private sector needs to be more involved in providing seed funding to start up businesses within these communities. This funding should be available to the youth with good business ideas.
Ensure that hardcore criminal, drug lords and 'dons' do not feel secure in these communities (consistent presence of the police, involvement in these communities as mentors to the youth, role model etc.)
If these recommendations are implemented, I am sure in the next few years there will be a reduction in murders in Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
