May the best man win
published: Friday | October 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CRESTON BOXHILL'S decision to contest the election for presidency of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) must be welcomed. At no time should an elected official get the sense that he or she can or should hold office for life, or until when they feel that it's time to step down (sounds familiar?).

Boxhill has been in the business of football much longer than Burrell and his ability to provide leadership to the fraternity should not be in doubt. The accomplishments of Jamaican football under the leadership of the captain cannot be taken lightly. Jamaicans should honour the captain for providing leadership and dedication to the development of football to our country.

At a minimum, I hope that Boxhill's challenge will put a spark in the governance of the JFF and force its leadership into finding solutions to our current lacklustre posture.

Burrell's ascendancy to leadership roles in CONCACAF and FIFA must be seen as personal accomplishments that will not necessarily bear fruit for Jamaica.

Good luck to both Boxhill and Burrell, and may the best man win.

I am, etc.,
