Turning a blind eye
published: Friday | October 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with interest your article on 'Rooting out corruption ...'. Well, until we can remove corruption from the head of the stream, a common cliché, but it still holds true, it will be nigh impossible to implement it at the lower level.

Sir, I have recent experience in Jamaica which, whilst not wishing to generalise, the institutions such as the church and sadly enough the legal profession, which one relies on for truth, honesty and integrity, are themselves either involved in corruption or choose to 'turn a blind eye'. There are so many of us Jamaicans today that are totally void of all moral values!

When I was growing up Jamaica was a mega-rich country, not materially, but in values. My perecption of life in Jamaica now is that we are so engrossed in the acquisition of material things that we will stop at nothing to achieve them.

I am, etc.,
