ST. CATHERINE:
A SENIOR citizen was freed yesterday in the St. Catherine Circuit Court where she had appeared to answer a manslaughter charge.
Allegations before the court are that on August 26, 1996, at around 12 noon, Dorris Rolliford, 66, of York Street, Linstead, St. Catherine, was at home with her four-year-old granddaughter who was left in her care. It was explained in court that during that time, she reportedly nailed two pieces of board in the front doorway as a barrier to prevent the toddler from leaving the house.
However, the toddler was hit by a vehicle after he strayed on to the street. The child died on the spot.
Investigations into the matter led to the arrest and charge of Rolliford with manslaughter.
When she appeared in the court yesterday, she was represented by attorney-at-law Arthur Kitchin. Having heard evidence from the accused, the judge, Justice Lloyd Hibbert, ruled no evidence and freed Rolliford.
