CHARLES BUCHANAN, Communications Manager at the National Water Commission (NWC) has announced that the water utility
has enterd a "new phase" of its restructuring
programme.
He said several persons were appointed on October 1 to fill critical positions under its new divisional structure, based on the recommendations put forward by the KPMG Peat Marwick audit conducted in 2001.
The new appointments include two vice-president positions. They are Courtney Lawes for the eastern division and Florence Logan for the western division. The selections were made based upon recommendations from a team consisting of the NWC's Board and consultants from an auditing firm who interviewed candidates.
The KPMG audit was to examine the operations of the company, after it incurred debt of $6.5 billion. It found several weaknesses in its operations.
The NWC commenced stage one of its restructuring exercise with a phased redundancy programme to take place over the next eighteen months. The overall programme is aimed at increasing efficiency in operations and financial viability, thereby bringing its operating expenses closer in line with revenues.
Other plans to be introduced include initiatives to acquire tools and equipment, upgrading of technology and the replacement of its aged infrastructure. The company also plans to aggressively pursue rate adjustments consistent with the cost of service it provides.
