WILLIAM KNIBB Memorial High booked their place in the inter-zone round of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition yesterday after ending the perfect run of former champions Cornwall College at the Elleston-Wakeland Community Centre.
Ricardo Geddes scored a 70th minute header to snap Cornwall's winning run at five games in Zone A as Mannings also had their five-game win streak brought to a halt in Zone C, going down 2-1 to Godfrey Stewart.
Four teams booked their places in the inter-zone round: William Knibb, Brown's Town from Zone D, Glenmuir in Zone H and Titchfield in Zone L.
This brings to nine the number of schools that have booked their places with another 15 still to be decided over the next week and a half.
At the Elleston-Wakeland field in Falmouth, Geddes led William Knibb to their second win over Cornwall in two seasons and the lead in the Zone by a point - 16 to 15 - when he got between two defenders to head past goalkeeper Milton Robinson who was making his first start, subbing for the suspended Tedroy Watson.
Both teams created chances but it was the home team, which lost the first-round game 2-1 in Montego Bay, which came closest after Neville Coleman hit the post in the first half after beating Robinson and with an open goal to shoot at.
Brown's Town made sure of their place by sending Cedric Titus to their second straight loss with a 1-0 win and they cannot finish lower than second in the zone.
Glenmuir advanced with a 2-1 win over Central while Clarendon College kept pace with a 3-0 win over Denbigh and are on the verge of qualification.
Titchfield join Seaforth as the qualifiers from Zone L after their 2-0 win over St. Thomas Technical at Carder Park.
In the big Zone E game, Munro College gained revenge over arch-rivals St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) when Wade Wadsworth scored in the first half to lead the Neil Harrison-coached team to a 1-0 win and to retake the lead in the standings.
Black River meanwhile eased into second place after a 2-1 win over B.B. Coke. Munro lead with 21 points, one more than Black River who they will meet on Tuesday with STETHS in third place on 18 points.
