St. Hugh's questions accuracy
published: Monday | October 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I NOTE with interest the grave omission of St. Hugh's High School from the article "CXC results: total disaster - Top Ten Secondary Schools CXC 2003", by Dr. Ralph Thompson published in The Gleaner on Friday, October 3, 2003.

Such an omission questions the accuracy of the data presented in view of St. Hugh's performance which is as follows:
CohortPasses%
English Language26821781
Mathematics20412159.4

These results would place St. Hugh's 7th in English and 10th in Mathematics.

This omission demotivates our staff members who work tirelessly to maintain high standards. We are requesting therefore that this oversight be made public by according St. Hugh's High School its proper ranking in the top ten performers and publishing same.

I am, etc.,

YVETTE SMITH

Principal

St. Hugh's High School

1 Leinster Road

Kingston 5

EDITOR'S NOTE: Dr. Thompson was careful to point out in a preamble to his analysis that the pass rates were calculated as a percentage of total student cohort for each school not as a percentage of the "entries" which was the old method. On this basis the ratings in the article are accurate, St. Hugh's just missing the 10th spot.
