Waterhouse turn on the heat
published: Monday | October 6, 2003

By Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

LIKE THE prodigal son who reaped benefits immediately on returning home, Waterhouse came up trumps at Drewsland, beating St. Mary's Star Cosmos 2-0 on their way to their second win in this season's Wray & Nephew National Premier League.

Played on a soggy surface which was a direct result of the heavy rains that drenched the field, the 'Firehouse' crew got their goals from Desmond Breakenridge and Kevin Lamey.

Breakenridge, the national Under-23 right-back who joined Waterhouse near the end of the second round last season from Reno, hit the jackpot for the first time with the club. Breakenridge headed home from a Irvino English corner to give his team the lead in the 27th minute. Not only did his goal broke the 0-0 tie but it hit the wind out of the visitors.

A minute away from the half Kevin Lamey rocketed home a defence-splitting pass from Damion Powell before embracing the Star Cosmos custodian Garfield Gayle. Meanwhile, the latter was a battered man as after the first 25 minutes of the game shots rained down on him like bombs over Baghdad as Waterhouse took him for target practice. It was not surprising when he had to be replaced at the end of the first half.

The second half could have spelt further disaster for Star Cosmos but poor shooting from Nigerian import Uchechukwu Chinyere, skipper English, Powell, Lamey and Demar Phillips ensured the scoreline remained unchanged and gave the St. Mary side a hint that they stood a chance of going away with a point.
