Close going in Manning Cup Group B
published: Monday | October 6, 2003

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

THE BATTLE for top spot in Group B of the 2003 Pepsi/Sports Plus schoolboy Manning Cup continues this afternoon.

Only a point separates the top three schools. Tivoli on 17 points oppose main rivals, Jamaica College (JC), 16 points, at Railway Oval. Ardenne on 16 host fourth place Wolmer's, 11.

All four teams still have a chance of advancing to the next round. Tivoli could cement their position with victory today. The west Kingston school whipped JC 4-1 in the first round at JC. They have another tough game against Ardenne on Saturday at Ardenne Road on Saturday.

Wolmer's, now playing away, will be trying to repeat their 2-0 home success over Ardenne.

In Group C, Mona only need a draw against Edith Dalton-James, a team they crushed 7-0 two weeks ago, to advance. Excelsior, on 19 points, have already advanced to the second round.

Mona will not only be looking to win today's match, they should also be looking to score a lot of goals, as the second place team has a chance of qualifying for the Walker Cup quarterfinals.

The six group winners and the best two second place teams advance to the Walker Cup quarterfinals.

An interesting battle also looms in Group F, Vauxhall, 14 points, and Kingston College (KC), 12, are the teams fighting to join early qualifiers St. Jago in the next round.
