Our people must come first
published: Wednesday | October 8, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS flabbergasted when I learned from the print media that some of our local institutions, companies and organisations have been sending their employees' uniforms abroad to be made, and likewise the contract to print the textbooks for our local schools.

This move is counter-productive and is demonstrating their total lack of patriotism and genuine intent for national development, coupled with their innate desire to destroy our country and nation.

Our unemployment rate is soaring like eagles that cannot find any comfortable place to settle and rest. While other countries consider their interests and people first, we tend not to. Even if we can find locally-trained and sometimes better-qualified people, who are more culturally prepared and better geared for success, we pass them over, and give our better-paying jobs to foreigners and those who are trained abroad.

Sir, why do you think more people are making the sacrifice to send their children to study abroad? Because they will have a better chance of obtaining employment and better-paying jobs. Hence, we keep putting down our country daily, while outsiders are acknowledging our greatness. I am not saying that we must not employ foreigners. What I am saying is that our nation and people must come first.

My decision on the matter is, to withdraw my interests from any firm or financial organisation that is involved in such a blatant act to further destroy our country and nation, and place my business in the hands of those, who like me, love our country and seek to protect and defend us in every way they can.

I am, etc.,
