Corruption, violence and crime

THE EDITOR, Sir:
READING THE news headlines this past week has been extremely depressing and disheartening. How did a country with so many talented people and so much promise, become a country of corruption, violence and crime? Jamaica was almost a black Mecca, a country respected and admired by black people in other parts of the world; we produce achievers in so many areas, ranging from sports, to entertainment to academia.
Now when others look at us, and see where we are today, they hang their heads in shame or turn away in disgust. It is quite tragic that we have gone from a reputation of a nation of hard-working people to one of corruption, crime and violence. We have even managed to be included in the top three countries with the highest murders per capita in the world.
The people who can make a difference have no interest in the future and have little regard for any legacy that will be left behind for our children. How do we stand tall and proud again? At what point will drug dons, gang leaders and politicians realise that they are also promoting self- destruction with their promotion of donmanship and gun culture?
I do hope the day will come when I can say again with no reservations, I am proud to be Jamaican.
