THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN YOUR Sunday, October 5 issue your featured article "Heavy demand from extortionists" has me dumbfounded. I have read where a proposal is presented to the Government for work to be done and that extortion fees are factored into the proposal.

I take it that is/was an accepted policy of the Government, since proposals for construction are usually scrutinised down to the last cent by quantity surveyors to detail the costs of the project. I guess the obvious question here is, who are these people to whom fees are paid? Is the Government dealing with faceless, nameless individuals? How are these fees paid? Do I have to continue to ask the obvious questions?

OUT OF THE SAND

I sincerely hope that Dr. Peter Phillips, the National Security Minister, Mr. Francis Forbes, Commissioner of Police, and the Prime Minister will soon pull their heads out of the sand searching for a piper from Hamelin to remove the criminal elements who continue to pull Jamaica down in the muck.

Dr. Phillips has been asking for and getting so-called help from England and America as to how to fight crime in Jamaica. Funny these two countries have no sustained programme to fight 'the yardies' in England and what seems to be the left-over of the 'Shower Posse' in America. Dr. Phillips, we created reggae and jerk right there in Jamaica. Let's continue the intuition. If a man's wife insists on seeking advice from another woman who has a history of divorces, my advice to that man is to converse with his wife and seek another source.

I am etc.,
