published: Sunday | October 12, 2003

Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Rusea's won back-to-back games for the first time this season when they downed Green Island High 2-0 yesterday to book their place in the inter-zone round of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup competition.

The Hanover school led two other schools into the inter-zone round as 20 of the 24 places have now been taken. Frome Technical, who beat Merlene Ottey 4-0 to take Zone B honours ahead of Rusea's, and Petersfield from Zone C are the other teams which confirmed their places yesterday.

Cedric Titus had beaten York Castle 5-0 on Wednesday to clinch their place alongside Browns Town.

Jamie Ramsey and Merrick Daley scored second-half goals for the nine-time winners, Rusea's in yesterday's game after coming from behind to beat Merlene Ottey on Wednesday.

Petersfield handed Zone C winners Mannings their third straight loss to clinch second place in the zone and edge out Godfrey Stewart High who defeated Knockalva 1-0.

Four more places are up for grabs, two each from the competitive zones E and G.

Munro College increased their lead in Zone E with a 3-0 win over Newell while Maggotty are on the verge of dropping out of the race after being beaten 1-0 by St. Elizabeth Technical, who now join Black River on 21 points but trail on goal difference. Munro are on 25 points.

In Zone G, Christiana inched closer to their first inter-zone place after grabbing another valuable point yesterday after a 1-1 draw with Knox.

An 82nd minute goal by Devon Bromfield helped Christiana High to pull off a come-from-behind draw against Knox.

Christiana after trailing Knox from the 27th minute of play were able to equalise from a well-taken free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box by Bromfield.

  • Wolmer's flog Tarrant

    Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

IT WAS not a game of dominoes by any stretch of imagination but yesterday's Manning Cup fixture which showcased Wolmer's versus Tarrant reflected the scoreline of the table sport. When the game ended at Wolmer's, the visitors were soundly beaten 6-0.

Four of the goals came from the boot of Jermaine Gardner, who before converting a 28th minute penalty, muffed a handful of scoring opportunities. His other goals came in the 48th, 67th and 68th minutes all beautifully crafted with the latter being a diving header past a sloppy Ricardo Gordon in Tarrant's goal.

Wolmer's other goals came from Paul Stewart (88th) and Ricardo Hyman 83rd.

Although his team won by a landslide, Wolmers' coach, Vassell Reynolds, knows his team cannot continue missing easy chances if it is to survive the rest of the way.

"I am worried in terms of the chances we are creating and not converting," Reynolds said.

"We just have to work on it and try and get it corrected by the time the second round starts".

Meanwhile, title gunners St. Jago thrashed Penwood 6-0 at Penwood with Mark Miller hitting home four goals, two more than his partner in crime, Norman Marsh.

Miller's personal tally now stands at 15 goals for the season while St. Jago took their tally to 38, giving up only one goal.

    YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

    Wolmer's 6 Tarrant 0, Ardenne 0 Tivoli 0, JC 2 Clan Carthy 1, Edith Dalton-James 2 Waterford 1, Kingston College 0 Meadowbrook 0, Penwood 0 St. Jago 6, Vauxhall 4 Greater Portmore 1.
