'Halt lease of Winnifred Beach'
published: Wednesday | October 15, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ in The Gleaner, to my dismay, that the Portland Parish Council has applied to the UDC to approve a Sandals resort at Winnifred Beach. It is my understanding this beautiful property was given to the people of Jamaica by the church, to be a public facility.

I would like to know how the Parish Council can apply to lease the beach to Sandals? My wife and I have spent at least a month in your beautiful country for each of the last 15 years. We feel sad to see the all-inclusive hotels taking over, building larger hotels on the most beautiful beaches while many smaller establishments are put out of business.

I hope the people of Jamaica will stop the Portland Parish Council from trying to lease the most beautiful beach in Jamaica for the use of a private resort.

I am, etc.,
