Enlightening and liberating work
published: Wednesday | October 15, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE ALLOW me to express a short supportive review of the novel 'Paint The Town Red!'

I must commend my former Lecturer, Professor Brian Meeks (UWI), for the superb work presented in this novel. This is nothing short of a priceless gem of contemporary Caribbean literature.

The book is based on a single character, a young man, around whom many exciting events from his childhood days through to his adulthood take place, and are described in a most colourful and truly magnificent way. The basis of the work is first developed around the 1970s and the ideology of the socio-political landscape that dictated the pace and progression of the society. The happenings of the 1980s and early '90s also feature quite prominently in the lives of this young man and those closest to him.

Believe me, I deliberately don't want to give too much away, because every Jamaican should read this book. We all will find some piece of ourselves, our psyche, our social composition, our identity in this work. Please Jamaica, have a read of this truly enlightening and liberating work.

Many thanks Prof. Meeks, Nuff Respect!

I am etc,

ROBERT H.P. HILL

Kingston 3.
