Munro demolish Balaclava
published: Wednesday | October 15, 2003

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

MUNRO COLLEGE advanced to the inter-zone round of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup schoolboys' football competition in fine style yesterday, scoring the season's widest margin of victory with a 14-0 win over Balaclava in Zone E.

The Neil Harrison-coached St. Elizabeth school which won the last of its seven titles 39 years ago in 1964, clinched the top spot from the zone as Black River High, who beat Maggotty 3-0, and St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), whose game against Newell was one of three that were washed out yesterday, will have to battle for the runners-up spot.

Christiana High missed a chance of booking their first inter-zone berth after their game against Spalding in Zone G was also rained out. Twenty-one of the 24 places have now been filled for the inter-zone round which is set to start on Saturday.

At Munro, Wade Wadsworth scored four times after getting a hat-trick against Newell on Saturday to run his season's tally to 10, captain Oraine Barrett got a hat-trick while Toric Robinson and Dervin Kinkaid got two each in the rout as Munro lead 6-0 at halftime.

Yesterday's 14 goals take Munro's tally for the season to 41, easily the best for any team in the competition, 20 of which came against Balaclava who they beat 6-0 in the first round.

With one game to go, Balaclava have conceded 50 goals.

Munro will now contest Group Three of the inter-zone round and will join the runners-up from Zone F, the winners of Zone G and Clarendon College, the runners-up of Zone H.

Black River kept pace in the points standings as Dashel Owens, Michael Rowe and top scorer Everett Mullings, who ran his tally to 10 this season with a late strike, ensured the points after the teams had played to a 1-1 draw.

The loss also erased Maggotty's slim hopes of advancing to the next round.

Today, zone honours will be at stake when first-time inter-zone qualifiers Brimmer Vale face St. Mary Technical in the final Zone K game.

St. Mary Technical will be seeking to avenge their first-round loss.

The winner will contest Group 5 along with Garvey Maceo, Charlemont High and Titchfield while the losers will play in Group 6 alongside Old Harbour, Dinthill and Seaforth.
