Jamaica Gleaner Letters
published: Thursday | October 16, 2003

Very informative and enlightening
THE EDITOR SIR, I WRITE to express the deep sense of gratitude and enjoyment I get from reading the articles published in the 'Mind And Spirit'/'Focus' columns of The Gleaner.

Shame on the Reverend
THE EDITOR, Sir: I FIND it quite appalling that the Rev. Canon Ernle Gordon would even think to suggest that, as a nation, we should be teaching our children to tolerate homosexuality in our schools - beginning at the prep school level.

Corruption problem, nothing new
THE EDITOR, Sir: JAMAICA'S PROBLEM with respect to corruption is not at all a new one. Jamaicans know that; they are not naive. And while commentary in The Sunday Gleaner (October 12) would link corruption with committees...

Against the leasing of Winifred Beach
THE EDITOR, Sir: IT WILL be a sad day for Jamaica and Jamaicans if and when Winifred Beach is leased to a 'for profit' corporation.

'Creepers' killing trees
THE EDITOR, Sir: I RECENTLY returned home to Jamaica where I was travelling as a tour member of the Friends of the Georgian Society of Jamaica. We had a wonderful trip to our beautiful island...

Spanish Town museum neglected
THE EDITOR, Sir: ON MY recent visit to the island I visited the museum in Spanish Town which holds many relics and valuable memories of our past.

C&W clarifies billing concerns
THE EDITOR, Sir: REFERENCE IS made to a letter captioned 'Switching off of Cable & Wireless' carried in the October 9 edition of your paper.

State of emergency not the solution
THE EDITOR, Sir: THE SUGGESTION of Mr. Kingsley Thomas in a recent address that the government should impose a state of emergency to curb crime...

We must stand against crime
THE EDITOR, Sir: THIS IS an open letter to all well-thinking Jamaicans. Let us no longer sit around and bask in lip-service, it is time we put an end to the scourge of crime that is prevalent in our society.

Are we really independent?
THE EDITOR, Sir: ARE WE begging to be re-colonised? In 1962 Jamaica broke away from the British rule and embraced independence.

New US mood
THE EDITOR, Sir: I AM deeply grateful to George Garwood, a teacher in Florida, for his letter that appeared in The Gleaner October 4, a letter I should otherwise have had to write myself.
