Constant Spring beaten 3-0
published: Thursday | October 16, 2003

By Paul-Andre Walker, Staff reporter

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Portmore United rediscovered their winning touch with a 3-0 thumping of Constant Spring at Constant Spring yesterday.

Roen Nelson, last year's leading goalscorer, struck twice and Jermie Piette also found the back of the net as Portmore comfortably dismissed their hosts.

"We showed intensity and fitness under wet conditions for 90 minutes and that is what made the difference today. We just hope to continue with this trend and play some good football," said Portmore's coach, Lenworth Hyde, after the victory.

Constant Spring missed several chances in the first 15 minutes and were made to pay. A corner from Portmore's, Kevin Deerr 20 minutes into the game saw Piette scoring against the run of play.

Thirteen minutes later, scored his second goal of the season to put Portmore 2-0 up.

A BEAUTIFUL RUN

In the 58th minute he doubled his tally for the game, when he finished a beautiful run down the flank by Kirk Ramsay with a powerful shot, leaving the Constant Spring crowd stunned.

It was Nelson's third double in as many games against the Spring team and he could have had a hat-trick had it not been for the assistant referee's flag.

Portmore's late substitute, Winston Griffiths, looked good on the ball but an off-the-ball fracas with Spring's Damion Benjamin saw the referee send off the midfielder for violent conduct.

Constant Spring's coach, Danny Lyn, thought the game was closer than the scoreline suggested.

"Portmore put away their chances and we didn't. I thought we had more chances than they did, we just didn't put ours away," Lyn said.
