Hanging necessary
published: Tuesday | October 21, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MOUNTING slaughter of our police men/women by criminals (so-called gunmen) has reached crisis proportions. The chilling silence of the human rights brigade is equally disturbing. Whenever our police personnel successfully defend themselves against the murderers the cacophony of protests from the 'rights' are deafening.

The curious situation is that 'hanging' is still on our statute book, supported by the overwhelming majority of our people. I liken the situation with the Bush administration. The event of the 9/11 calamity propelled the administration into action. They did not 'pussy-foot' around in retaliation, awaiting the next event, but went into action against the assumed source of the evil.

I recall the Shakespeare words 'cowards die many times before their deaths but the valiant taste of death but once'.

Emulate the initiative of our sister country Trinidad. Ignore the hysterical screams of the 'human rights'. Line up the murderers, after due process, and hang them as decreed by our laws and supported by the will of our people. This is the only signal that these cowards will understand. If we fail to send the right signals potential young criminals will only reflect in the 'glory' and notoriety of these evil people.

I am, etc.,

A.S. BYFIELD
