THE EDITOR, Sir:
WHATEVER MAY be said of Jamaica's present Prime Minister Percival James Patterson, one has to admit that he is a very insightful man.
He has told us in no uncertain terms the source of our national curse - The fight for scarce benefits and political spoils has created a polarised society in which we operate like hostile tribes perpetually at war. In addition, he tells us that a corrupt Police Force cannot investigate corruption.
Harvard's scholar/writer Laurie Gunst in her book 'Born Fi Dead', refers to "the secret symbiosis between the politicians and their mercenaries". As she further states, "These island desperados are the bastard offspring of Jamaica's violent political system and the gunslinger ethos of American movies" - tropical bad guys acting out fantasies from the spaghetti westerns..."
Why in heaven's name those in authority are searching for the roots of crime? Isn't it obvious? Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
I am, etc.,
