Desecrating our flag
published: Tuesday | October 21, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS in Jamaica recently for a one-month programme at the University of the West Indies. I must say notwithstanding the many reports of crime on the various newscasts, I found Jamaica to be a truly enjoyable place.

My visits to Port Royal and the Jerk Festival are experiences I will cherish for a long time.

Many of the persons with whom I came into contact created a tremendous impact on the other students and myself.

My stay in Jamaica resulted in my being able to view some of the matches in the World Netball Tournament. It is partly because of this that I write.

The organisers of the tournament must be commended for putting on such a good tournament. However the power outage during the crucial match between Australia and the host country must be a perennial embarrassment.

FLAG ON THE GROUND

My greatest concern was raised days before the opening of the tournament during my first visit to the complex to look at the teams train. It had to do with the painting of the Jamaica Flag on the edge of the court of the netball complex!

I raised this with a few knowledgeable persons while there but was told that it was not a problem! I was unable to comprehend how a painting of a national flag on the ground to be trampled on by everyone (desecration?) was not a problem.

I could be grateful if you can investigate this and ensure that the necessary action is taken and if warranted, an apology tendered to all Jamaicans.

I am, etc.,

E. GLENFORD
