First female to head regional shipping body

NEWLY APPOINTED Chief Executive Officer of Seaboard Jamaica, Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester was unanimously elected President of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA), a regional body representing maritime interests.

She was elected last Tuesday (Oct. 14) at the 33rd Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition at the Half Moon Hotel in Montego Bay, St. James.

Mrs. Robertson-Sylvester, the first woman to become President in the 33-year history of the CSA, is to lead the Association's General Council for the next year and spearhead its development process. She succeeds Trinidadian, Capt. Rawle Baddaloo, of Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation (PLIPDECO) and was Vice President on the Council for two years. The new VP is, Puerto Rican, Fernando Rivera, and a former President of the Puerto Rican Shipping Association.

APPOINTMENT

Just recently, Mrs. Robertson-Sylvester was appointed Chief Executive Officer for the local operations of Seaboard Marine, a leading carrier in the United States. She has worked with Seaboard as Director of Sales and Marketing since 1999.

Prior to Seaboard, she held various positions with several shipping companies, including Director of Sales and Marketing at Jamaica Freight and Shipping where she managed sales, marketing and advertising for the lines represented including Seaboard Marine, Jamaica Producers Shipping Co., Kent Line, Ivaran Shipping and Mitsui. She also worked as Line Manager, and subsequently Sales and Marketing Manager at Kirk Line and as Project Manager for Coastal Shipping/Interseas where she supervised the repair and dry-docking of a ro-ro vessel in Colombia. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and a Diploma in Shipping Logistics from the Norwegian Shipping Academy.

Other members of the CSA General Council are Remy Vyzleman - Surinam; Sonja Voisin-Tom - Trinidad; Nathan Dundas - Antigua; Carlos Urriola - Panama; Tom Paelinck - Miami, US; Bas Noorman, Europe and Harry Maragh and Grantley Stephenson from Jamaica.

The CSA is a regional multinational association of private and public sector interests representing the maritime community of the region. Membership includes more than 100 port operators, shipping lines and shipping agents.
