Swimming instructor murdered in Portmore
published: Wednesday | October 22, 2003

WAYNE ANGUIN had completed washing his car and was in the process of picking up his sister to attend church on Sunday night, but he never made it.

He was attacked and shot several times outside his gate at 7 East, Greater Portmore, St. Catherine by a lone gunman who the police said rode up on a bicycle. Eye witnesses said the killer pulled a firearm from his waistband and shot Mr. Anguin, who was sitting in his car.

A former school teacher at Queen's High School, St. Andrew, the 40-year-old swimming instructor died on the spot.

"Fragments of his head were splattered in the car," a relative told The Gleaner on Sunday night.

Mr. Anguin's death has raised further concerns among the citizens of south St. Catherine about the tide of violence sweeping their area. Over the past two weeks at least four persons have been shot and killed, as gunmen continue to terrorise communities in Portmore.

The police have noted the trend and, according to Tilford Johnson, the deputy police commissioner in charge of operations, have put a special plan in place for Portmore. Last week, Police Commissioner Francis Forbes listed south St. Catherine among five divisions in which pilot projects have been launched to tackle the crime problem.
