Three St Ann students get scholarships
published: Wednesday | October 22, 2003

OCHO RIOS, St. Ann:

THE ST. Ann Friends for Education Trust has offered financial assistance to three needy students in the parish to help fund the first year of their high school education.

$10,000 EACH

The three scholarships valued at $10,000 each, were presented to Celia Traille of Ferncourt High School, Melissa Smith of Ocho Rios High and Monique Scharschmidt of Westwood High - all successful candidates in this year's Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).

The presentations were made recently at a function held at the Lodge building in St. Ann's Bay.

The recipients were selected from Moneague Primary and Junior High, St. Ann's Bay Primary and Priory Primary respectively, through a process of evaluation conducted by both their teachers and a select panel made up of members of the Trust.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, executive chairman of the St. Ann Friends for Education Trust, Sybil Christie, implored both the students and their parents to make the best use of the funds received.

Miss Christie said that although the scholarship grant was for only one year, the Trust will continue to monitor the progress of the recipients and if possible, will seek sponsors to assist them if they are doing well in school.

IMPORTANCE OF ASSISTANCE

Also speaking at the function were Trustees James Walsh and Louise Jackson who pointed to the importance of educational assistance at this time to help ease the burden on parents and challenge the students to show their appreciation through high achievement in their school work.
