Correct social injustices now
published: Friday | October 24, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with dismay and disbelief of the person who was 'lost' in the prison system for 24 years and released only after human rights groups 'discovered' him. In brief, situations such as the aforementioned reflects terribly on the state's commitment to its citizens' fundamental liberties.

This in turn further isolates and discourages Jamaican students and professionals residing abroad (myself included) from 'returning home'.

It is time now for incidents like these to cease from occurring. Patriotism does not exist in a vacuum, and external factors such as government hubris, a debauched social infrastructure and overtones of class-based justice will hold sway over the positives we have achieved that should bolster our commitment to this great country.

I am, etc.,
