Crime hurting tourist sector
published: Friday | October 24, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I DO realise how important the tourist industry is to your country but for God's sake, what is this level of violence doing to your people?

I am afraid for those people living in the areas affected.

What are the root causes of this violence? If poverty and/or lack of employment, and/or proper paying employment are the reasons, then I say let's make the business people who are thriving from the tourist industry in your country take some responsibility.

Perhaps tourists that come to your land should take some responsibility and make certain that the resort operators and owners whom we chose to patronise are providing decent wages and even housing to their employees. Perhaps these same operators should not be afraid to advertise how seriously they take their responsibility and include their efforts to improve the way of life for the Jamaican worker in their advertising campaigns here in our countries.

I am, etc.,
