Portia wants speedy probe
published: Sunday | October 26, 2003

Simpson Miller

MINISTER OF Local Government, Community Development and Sports, Portia Simpson Miller, who is acting as head of the Government in the absence of the Prime Minister, has ordered "a thorough and immediate investigation" into yesterday's shootings in Flankers, St. James, which resulted in the death of two men, and sparked unrest in the area.

Mrs. Simpson Miller has given instructions that the independent Public Police Complaints Authority and the Bureau of Special Investigation both involve themselves in the probe to establish exactly what took place at Flankers.

She issued a statement yesterday saying that, "No stone must be left unturned in getting to the heart of this regrettable matter so that justice may be served."

Minister Simpson Miller also expressed condolences and sympathy to the relatives of the victims, and appealed to eye-witnesses to the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.

It is important, the Minister said, that all the citizens co-operate to ensure that normality be restored.
