THREE MORE residents had to leave their homes yesterday in the flood-prone community of New River in St. Elizabeth, as water continued to rise in the area.
According to Paul Saunders, deputy director-general at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the three residents are now temporarily lodged at a church shelter in New River.
When The Sunday Gleaner contacted the Black River Police divisional headquarters, Corporal Allecia Stewart of the Constabulary Communications Network (CCN), said the police were on the alert in case of emergencies and evacuation. The CCN officer also said that the situation had not improved as water was not receding due to the saturated area.
So far, eight persons have had to evacuate their homes in the New River community which has been under flood waters since last Monday.
Mr. Saunders was, however, unable to give any more details up to press time, but says that the situation was being closely monitored.
