Cornwall, Holmwood look set to advance
published: Monday | October 27, 2003

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

CORNWALL College and Holmwood Technical will need only a point today to book a place in the top eight of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup competition and the Ben Francis Knockout, when they play rescheduled Inter-Zone games today.

Cornwall College will face Mannings at the Bay Road Sports Complex in Sav-la-mar, while Holmwood will meet contenders Bellefield High in a Group Four game at Porus Community Centre. Both games will kick off at 3:30 p.m.

Two other games will be played as Garvey Maceo, still in contention, will face out of contention Brimmer Vale at Dinthill in Group Five, while Manchester High and Christiana will meet in a Group Three game of academic interest at Brooks Park.

Four schools have booked their places already, Frome Technical from Group One, Clarendon College and Munro from Group Three and Dinthill Technical from Group Six.

The full list of teams in the last eight will not be known until later, however, as rains and fan intervention forced the early end to three games on Saturday.

The Group Four game between Bellefield and St. Elizabeth Technical at Black River High and the Group Five game between Garvey Maceo and Titchfield at Brancourt were called off due to muddy outfields.

Crowd violence at Emmet Park forced the early stoppage of the Group Six game between Seaforth High and Old Harbour.

Fresh from their come from behind 2-1 win over defending champions Rusea's at Jarrett Park on Saturday, Cornwall College need only a point today against Mannings to top Group One and take one of the qualifying places.

Cornwall and Rusea's are tied at the top of Group One with six points and a plus two-goal difference. A point for Cornwall would eliminate the champions who would join last season's semi-finalists William Knibb and Old Harbour on the sidelines.

Holmwood is also in a good position to snatch a place as a point from Bellefield, which lost their first game, would be enough for them to take a place in the next round.

Holmwood won both games and have six points, but Bellefield must win today's and their other game against St. Elizabeth Technical.
