By George Henry, Gleaner WriterCLARENDON: JAMAICA LABOUR Party delegates are supporting Michael Stern as replacement caretaker for North West Clarendon when Clifton Stone steps down.
At the JLP's constituency conference held at the Edwin Allen High School on Sunday, delegates and supporters indicated their preference for Stern, a former National Democratic Movement vice-president who represented that party in the same constituency in the October 2002 General Election last year.
Stern who resigned from the struggling NDM in July, has since been approved as member in the JLP.
The newly-accepted Labourite was seen lifted and carried around the auditorium at the Edwin Allen High School by a throng of supporters, who were shouting, "If a nuh Stern, a nuh nobody else."
Stone will be quitting representational politics following the party's annual conference in November.
The former MP who was also present at Sunday's constituency conference told the scores of green-clad, loud cheering Labourites that he would be passing on the baton as caretaker to whomever the delegates endorsed, and that he would be working with the person chosen.
Mr. Stone said that following the annual conference, all persons who have indicated an interest in the caretakership would be interviewed, after which "they will have a run off, as you call it, and you the people will be called upon to make the final decision."
The Gleaner understands that JLP members Michael Abrahams and Travis Spence have also indicated their interest in representing the constituency.
