Employment woes of youth
published: Monday | November 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a 25-year old woman who has been unemployed almost two years now. I am a graduate of HEART with a certificate in Secretarial Skills where I majored in subject areas including principles of business, office procedures, typewriting, computer science, shorthand and many others. Of course, mathematics and English were mandatory subjects for any course. I also have a CXC pass in English language and I am, at present, pursuing other subjects by doing evening classes.

The problem that I face constantly as I seek out job opportunities is two-fold and it has got to the point where I am now totally frustrated. Employers keep telling me that: (1) I am not qualified enough because I do not have Math, POB, OP and other subjects much less a degree or anything like that, and (2) I am not experienced enough for them to hire me.

After hearing these comments over and over again I had to ask this question; if I do not have education down on a piece of paper but I have the skills and guts to get your job done perfectly why turn me down? And if I don't ever get employed how will I have job experience.

I want to make a positive impact in my country but I am being hindered from accomplishing that dream.

I am, etc.,
