Ex-Gleaner writer dies at 98
published: Monday | November 3, 2003

FORMER GLEANER and Children's Own writer Lucille Evadne Jones, nee Robinson, is dead. She was 98 years old.

Mrs. Jones died last Wednesday at the Green Acres Nursing Home in St. Andrew.

A retired teacher, Mrs. Jones had written several articles relating the experiences in rural Jamaica before there was electricity, piped water and paved roads. She had also documented stories about cultural activities such as maypole dancing, tea-leaf reading and garden parties.

As a teacher, she dedicated many years to improving the conditions of many small children, especially in St. Mary, and promoted proper hygiene practices among parents to avert certain diseases. Mrs. Jones was also a volunteer at the National Children's Home for many years.

In 1933, she married Frederick H. Jones, former chief inspector of schools, and the union produced two children. Mr. Jones died in 1985. Mrs. Jones is survived by daughters, Barbara Nelson and Sheila Bhagwat, and four grandchildren.

The service of thanksgiving for the life of the late Lucille Jones will be held at Providence Methodist Church, Liguanea, on Thursday, November 6 at 1:00 p.m.
