'St Bess' infirmary gets facelift
published: Thursday | November 6, 2003

FOLLOWING THE signing of a $4.199 million contract between the Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Sport and Professional Haulage and Construction 2000 Limited of St. Ann, major repair work has started on the St. Elizabeth Infirmary in Santa Cruz.

According to Superintendent of Roads and Works of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, Kenroy Stewart, the contract for the work on the infirmary has been awarded to Professional Haulage and Construction 2000 Limited, of St. Ann, to the tune of $4,199,693.71

"The work is progressing smoothly and it entails repairs to the male and female wards and storeroom, among other sections of the facility. In addition, estimates for the following are to be prepared and forwarded to the Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Sport for payment," Mr. Stewart said in an interview with The Gleaner last Friday.

The Parish Council Superintendent also noted that very shortly, the inmates at the infirmary would have better living quarters and in general a better living environment.

The contract signing came at a time when the matron of the infirmary, Palloris Kenlock, was calling for the major repairs to be done at the facility.

When The Gleaner visited the site last Friday, work had been done on some sections of the infirmary.

Mrs. Kenlock told The Gleaner in an earlier interview that she was happy that the work had started, noting that it would benefit the inmates and members of staff greatly. "We are grateful to the Ministry for this allocation because the facility was really in need of repair," she said.
