Who is the church?
published: Thursday | November 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FROM TIME to time, I read articles and hear speeches of my fellow Jamaicans calling for the 'Church' to speak out/stand up/do something/ stop sleeping. Then I ask myself, who is the 'Church?'

I wonder if those voices ever stop to consider that indirectly, they are talking to the image they see in the 'glass mirror'.

The 'Church' is not a wooden or concrete structure located at a particular address. The 'Church' is not the pastor/minister/bishop/father.

The 'Church', irrespective of their particular belief is the politician, farmer, taxi operator, hairdresser, banker, plumber, carpenter, welder, policeman/woman, insurance agent, unemployed person, teacher, doctor, nurse just about everyone in our society are members of the 'Church'.

We are all accountable and responsible to each other for our actions and non-actions.

It is so easy to point a finger and identify a fault. How many of us forget where the other 'Three Fingers' are pointing. How many of us offer a solution to a particular problem immediately after we criticise a problem?

If we are that serious about improving our society, solving one problem, give a solution, give an answer, give some help.

Jamaica is our country. Let us show we love our country. Let us demonstrate that we care. Let us, by our collective efforts come together as 'One Church' and build Jamaica with constructive criticisms and give valuable information for solving that particular problem.

It is so easy when the 'chain of life' is strong in all links.

I am, etc.,

H. INNIS
