JCF should be disbanded
published: Thursday | November 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE HAVE a police force that was born as a colonial tool to restrain the dissatisfied poor and it persists today.

To the citizen the force must sometimes seem like an invading army of oppression. What is to be done?

The people must feel that the force belongs to them. In the UK and the USA police forces are of the community. The giant JCF should be disbanded and replaced by separate forces for each parish supervised by a board of citizens. Certainly not a panacea but a step on the journey.

I am etc,
