NIC rep clears air on blocked drains
published: Friday | November 7, 2003

By Michael McLean, Gleaner Writer

SANTA CRUZ, St. Elizabeth:

MR .FELTON Brown of the National Irrigation Commission dismissed claims by residents in New River, St. Elizabeth, that blocked drains in the area are behind their water woes.

"The National Irrigation Commission is only responsible for agricultural drains and those drains in the community of New River are 100 per cent clear." He further stated that the drains could not have stopped the community from being flooded.

Speaking in an interview with The Gleaner, Mr. Brown said the water levels have been significantly reduced because they have opened another exit at Grass River at the border of the Black River for the water to run off.

Mr. Brown said the National Water Resources Authority has placed a gauge in New River and the latest reading showed that the water has lowered to two inches.
