Not us! says Police Service Commission
published: Saturday | November 8, 2003

THE POLICE Service Commission (PSC) in responding to reports in yesterday's Gleaner, said it was not responsible for the temporary freeze.

An independent body, the PSC said it had been "exploring measures which could be introduced to enable greater transparency and accountability by the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force in the exercise of their duties."

In a statement yesterday, the PSC said it "has taken no decision regarding any change in the terms of appointment of senior police officers, nor has it taken any decision with regard to the promotion of senior police officers."

The PSC added that the implications of any such change would require extensive research, legal advice and consultations.

However, the Police Federation yesterday said it saw the PSC's release as a change in position and welcomed the Government's move to back down on the decision to impose a freeze on all promotions above the rank of Inspector in the Police Force.

Sergeant David White, chairman of the Police Federation in an interview with The Gleaner last night said the Federation "welcomes this new move and it is good that they are able to understand how we feel."
