Flooding in western St Andrew

SEVERAL COMMUNITIES in the Corporate Area were flooded yesterday following heavy showers influenced by a tropical wave stationed east of the island.

Among the affected communities were Patrick City, Washington Gardens, Cooreville Gardens, New Haven and Duhaney Park in western St. Andrew. Flooding was also reported along Marcus Garvey Drive.

The Office of Disaster Pre-paredness and Emergency Man-agement (ODPEM) confirmed that the communities were flooded. A spokesperson for the ODPEM said the office was told that "yards were being flooded and water was coming into the houses." The fire brigade and a team from the ODPEM was dispatched to the area.

MINOR EARTHQUAKE

Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Service said a tropical wave positioned just east of the island was influencing the inclement weather conditions over the island and could last into today. Scattered showers are expected in the afternoon over interior areas of the island.

A minor earthquake also shook the island yesterday. It was reportedly felt in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine at about 12:48 p.m. The epicentre was located near Bog Walk, St. Catherine the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies reported.
