THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM writing with regards to the article entitled 'Tempers rise at elections' dated Sunday, November 9, 2003. While I commend Mr. Edmund Bartlett for being a gentleman in accepting his defeat, I am very disappointed at the behaviour of Mr. Robertson and Ms. Grange, according to the report from The Gleaner headline 'Booted Robertson, Chang oust 'Babsy' and Bartlett for senior positions'.
Ms. Grange made it clear that she will not work with Mr. Robertson. I believe that this is a minus for a party in rebuilding. Part of rebuilding is to accept loss, move on with the programme professionally, which I think is lacking in the party and has been contributing to its integrity. Quite frankly, too, I believe that Mr. Robertson ought to be careful of his attitude. His comments are not reflective of a budding leader, for example his remark, 'Look how the whole a oonu hungry' is cheap and is a poor display of a leader worse yet a public figure.
I also perceived him to be very disrespectful to his leader Mr. Seaga, his comments 'he (Mr. Seaga) could never be speaking about me' and 'Mr. Seaga has to be supportive of anything that can help him to win in a democratic party' are of outright disrespect. As a rookie, he needs to humble himself and respect his superiors. He will need the expertise from them to be more effective. I suggest that he take a page from Mr. Bartlett's book and learn how to be a gentleman.
As for Ms. Grange, humility is the key and tact is a complement.
New brooms sweep clean but old brooms know the corners best. Optimum job is done when they both work together. Mr. Robertson and Ms. Grange must work together for the optimum growth of the party. Nuff respect.
I am, etc.,
