Cementing the issue
published: Wednesday | November 12, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MAY I add to the spirited debate about the proposed 50 per cent tariff Minister Davis is contemplating to impose on all imported cement?

Recently, I have been listening to the many talk shows and read the daily newspapers. However, I was privy to hear both sides of the debate by the two representatives from the main players in the market: that is, Carib Cement and Mainland Hardware, on KLAS's 'First Edition' that helped me make up my mind.

It is my opinion that Minister Davis must be very careful, should he proceed to press ahead with this tariff because it will not only have adverse repercussions for the construction industry, but future house owners and the economy. Furthermore, are we to believe that this action will not create demands from other industry groups, and how will this be perceived and treated by the World Trade Organisation?

My economics might be off, but I think Carib Cement will have to be more efficient in its operations and it should not be at the expense of the Jamaican people.

I am, etc.,

MICHAEL JOHNSON
