Leadership changes in the JLP
published: Friday | November 14, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I ADMIRE the leadership changes that are taking place within the JLP and the impact of the younger leaders on the party's vision. The humility, grace and respect demonstrated by Mr. Chang and Mr. Robertson towards their predecessors is welcomed. Ms. Grange and Mr. Bartlett have and no doubt will continue to build the party's credence as they endeavour to become the next government. These two former deputy leaders must be given the utmost admiration for their work over the years. It will take much leadership and maturity to facilitate the real change that is necessary to take the JLP to the next level. It will not be easy.

Mr. Seaga has much grooming to do to help the party accommodate these changes. He too must be admired for his ultimate willingness to recognise that these changes are good for the party and the country. He has laid a good foundation on which these younger leaders can build, not destroy.

So, Mr. Seaga, have no fear. Your legacy is well protected and the party will be in good hands. Help them and the party's organisation prepare for the changes that are inevitable.

If you want different results, then you have to do some things differently. Evidently, the JLP members are ready and bold enough to accept the leadership changes. I admire the courage and maturity of the JLP leaders, young and old. These changes will go a far way in maintaining our democratic institutions in Jamaica.

I am etc.,
