Consultant urges better use of pesticides
published: Saturday | November 15, 2003

Byron McDaniel, Gleaner Writer

WALDERSTON, Manchester:

AUSTIN MAITLAND, Caribbean consultant for Syngenta (a worldwide fungicide manufacturer), has urged farmers to practise safety precautions when using pesticides.

He said this was important to maintain good health and therefore ensure production capacity.

Mr. Maitland was speaking recently at a field day seminar dubbed 'Increasing our knowledge for crop care via new technology', which was held in John's Hall, Manchester.

The seminar was hosted by Henry and Lindo (H&L) Agri and Marine Company Limited, in collaboration with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).

Mr. Maitland also introduced a new pesticide called Amistar. He said the water-dispersible chemical was effective in controlling several diseases and that it was not very hazardous to the environment.

ROTATE CHEMICALS

However, he said that farmers should also rotate chemicals to encourage optimal plant growth.

Enos Francis, marketing and development manager at H&L Agri Ltd., said that the Karate Zeon, and Actara chemicals were recommended for use when changing chemicals.

TIPS ON USING PESTICIDES

  • Do not smoke or eat while using the chemical.

  • Avoid contact with spray.

  • Wash container when spraying is complete.

  • Do not place chemicals in the reach of children.

  • Wash work clothes.
